The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees with job-protected leave for certain medical and family reasons. Mental health conditions can qualify for FMLA leave, but documentation requirements vary depending on the employer and specific circumstances.
Some employers require FMLA documentation to be completed by a medical doctor, such as a primary care physician or psychiatrist. In these cases, Katie would not be able to provide the necessary documentation directly.
Other employers may accept FMLA documentation from a licensed mental health professional, such as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) like Katie. In these instances, Katie can work with you to complete the necessary paperwork and provide the required information about your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, and prognosis.
If you are considering requesting FMLA leave for a mental health condition, discuss your needs with Katie as early as possible in the treatment process. She will gather the necessary information and documentation to support your request and help you navigate any potential challenges or barriers.
Please be aware that completing FMLA forms and reports can be time-intensive, and additional fees may apply for these services. Katie will discuss any associated costs with you upfront and work with you to determine the most appropriate and cost-effective approach to your FMLA documentation needs.

Getting Started
Investing in your mental health is an investment in your overall quality of life, relationships, and well-being. By working with a mental health counselor, you can gain valuable insights, learn new skills, and develop a toolkit of strategies to navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and self-awareness.
While everyone faces challenges in life, there are times when our struggles feel overwhelming, persistent, or beyond our ability to cope on our own. If you find yourself in any of the following situations, it may be beneficial to consider seeing a mental health counselor:
1. Emotional distress: If you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger, hopelessness, or emptiness that interfere with your daily life and relationships, a counselor can help you navigate these emotions and develop coping strategies.
2. Relationship difficulties: When you find yourself struggling to communicate effectively, constantly arguing, or feeling disconnected from loved ones, a mental health professional can provide tools and insights to improve your relationships and interpersonal skills.
3. Work-related stress: If your job is causing significant stress, burnout, or dissatisfaction that is impacting your overall well-being, a counselor can help you develop stress management techniques, set healthy boundaries, and explore career options that align with your values and goals.
4. Life transitions: Major life changes such as a new job, a move, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a loved one can be emotionally challenging. A mental health counselor can provide support and guidance as you navigate these transitions and adapt to new circumstances.
5. Trauma or difficult past experiences: If you have experienced trauma or have unresolved issues from your past that are impacting your present life, a counselor can help you process these experiences, heal emotional wounds, and develop resilience.
6. Substance use or addictive behaviors: When you find yourself relying on substances or engaging in behaviors to cope with stress or emotions, a mental health professional can help you understand the underlying issues and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
7. Personal growth and self-discovery: Even if you are not experiencing significant distress, working with a counselor can be a valuable opportunity for self-exploration, personal growth, and developing a deeper understanding of yourself and your goals.
8. ADHD: If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or if you suspect that you may have ADHD, a mental health counselor can help you understand and manage the challenges associated with this neurodevelopmental disorder. They can provide strategies for improving focus, organization, and time management skills, as well as support for navigating relationships and work or school environments.
9. Autism: If you or a loved one are on the autism spectrum, a mental health counselor who specializes in working with neurodivergent individuals can provide invaluable support. They can help you understand and embrace your unique strengths, develop coping strategies for sensory sensitivities and social challenges, and work with you to create a fulfilling life that aligns with your needs and goals.
Katie employs a diverse range of carefully selected, evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to each client's unique needs. Her toolkit includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Existential Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and a harm-reduction approach for substance use.
Central to Katie's therapeutic philosophy is providing strengths-based, values-driven, and mindfulness-informed care in a safe, non-judgmental space. She offers support through the lenses of attachment theory, body positivity, sex positivity, trauma-informed care, and neurodivergent-affirming practices.
Clients can expect a direct, curious, warm, and collaborative therapeutic relationship with Katie. She develops a comprehensive understanding of each client's strengths and challenges, considering their history, cultural background, neurodivergence, and the interplay between physical and mental health. Katie integrates various tools and techniques to support clients in achieving their goals, including motivational interviewing, psychoeducation, somatic awareness practices, and coaching strategies for executive functioning challenges. With her extensive training and commitment to personalized care, Katie is well-equipped to support clients in navigating mental health complexities and achieving lasting well-being.
Absolutely! We are inclusive and welcome all adults seeking mental health support, regardless of whether they have ADHD, are neurodivergent, or have a specific diagnosis.
We offer comprehensive care and evidence-based treatments for a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use issues, and more. Whether you are struggling with a particular issue or want to improve your overall mental health, our comprehensive care and evidence-based treatments are tailored to your unique needs, experiences, and goals.
Our neurodiversity-affirming approach views neurodivergence as a natural form of human diversity and we celebrate the unique ways in which each individual perceives and interacts with the world. We believe that you are the expert on your own lived experience.
If you identify with ADHD, ADD, AuDHD, Autism, or other neurodiverse experiences, our work will benefit you, even without an official diagnosis.
We understand that challenges often arise from society's structure privileging neurotypical ways of thinking. Our goal is to support you in understanding your strengths and challenges, developing strategies, and navigating a world not always designed for neurodivergent needs.
Katie specializes in helping you determine medical or mental health conditions occurring alongside neurodivergence and is passionate about helping clients develop skills to interact with providers and medical systems to get their needs met. When working with Katie, expect a warm, nonjudgmental space where your experiences are respected, and a personalized treatment plan reflecting your values and priorities.
The decision to work with a coach, therapist, or medication provider depends on your individual needs, goals, and the nature of the challenges you are facing. Each professional offers a unique approach to supporting your mental health and well-being, and in some cases, a combination of these services may be most beneficial. Consider speaking with your primary care physician or a mental health professional for personalized recommendations.
Note: ADHD is best managed through a team approach, with medication management (from a provider specializing in ADHD) plus behavioral interventions, such as therapy with a therapist experienced in ADHD and executive functioning skill-building.
Coach: Focuses on helping you identify and achieve specific personal or professional goals through guidance, accountability, and support. Coaches are not typically trained to diagnose or treat mental health conditions, and insurance does not reimburse for coaching.
Therapist: A licensed mental health professional who provides treatment for emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns using evidence-based techniques. Therapy may be a good fit if you are struggling with mental health symptoms or significant life stressors. Always ask about the provider's experience and training in treating mental health in people with developmental disorders (including ADHD, Autism, and Learning Differences).
Medication Provider: A medical professional who can prescribe medication. Many Primary Care Providers (MD or ND) can prescribe but do not have the training or time to thoroughly assess, diagnose, and manage medication for mental health and/or neurodivergence. A Psychiatrist is an MD who specializes in mental health. Some also work with neurodivergence. A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) is a medical nurse who specializes in mental health.
Working with a combination of these professionals may be the most effective approach. If you have questions or would like to explore working with Katie in conjunction with other services, please reach out for help navigating your options and finding the best support for you.

Session Details
We offer online telehealth appointments, allowing you to receive high-quality support from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Our goal is to make mental health care accessible and convenient.
Virtual sessions provide a flexible, secure, and effective alternative to traditional in-person therapy. By eliminating the need to travel to an office, telehealth appointments make it easier for you to prioritize your mental health, even with a busy schedule or mobility constraints.
During virtual sessions, you can expect the same level of personalized care, expertise, and attentive listening as in-person meetings. We utilize a secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platform (SimplePractice).
A standard therapy session typically lasts around 50 minutes. During this time, you can share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences while Katie listens attentively, offers insights, and collaborates with you to develop strategies and solutions tailored to your unique needs and goals.
While 50 minutes is standard, every individual's needs are unique. If you feel that longer or shorter sessions would be more beneficial, it is open for discussion. Some individuals may find that 80-minute or 90-minute sessions allow for deeper, more intensive work, particularly when addressing complex issues.
Regardless of the session length, Katie will be fully dedicated to your growth and well-being, working efficiently and effectively to help you make the most of your time together.
The number of therapy sessions needed varies for each individual, depending on the complexity of the issues you're facing, your personal goals for treatment, and your unique life circumstances.
For some, short-term therapy focusing on a specific issue or goal may be most appropriate, such as 6-12 sessions focused on learning about ADHD, diagnosing mental health conditions, and building skills to overcome a particular challenge or navigate a life transition.
Others may benefit from longer-term therapy to address more complex, longstanding patterns or to work towards significant life changes. In these situations, ongoing sessions over several months or even years may provide the sustained support, insight, and skill-building needed for lasting change.
Progress in therapy is not always linear, and you may experience periods of growth, plateaus, or temporary setbacks. Katie will support you through these ups and downs, helping you maintain momentum and celebrate your successes.
The number of sessions you need will be a collaborative decision between you and Katie, based on your goals, progress, and feelings about the therapeutic process. You may start with a specific number of sessions and reassess as you go, adjusting the frequency or duration of treatment based on your needs.
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your therapy sessions with Katie:
1. Be open and honest: Therapy is a safe, non-judgmental space where you can discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly. The more transparent you are about your challenges, both personal and professional, the better Katie can understand your needs and provide effective support. Feel free to share about your unique identities, relationship dynamics, and lifestyle without fear of stigma or discrimination.
2. Set clear goals: Consider how your mental health impacts your work, family life, and overall well-being. Consider how your identities and lifestyle intersect with your mental health, work, family life, and overall well-being. Having a clear sense of what you want to accomplish or change will help guide your sessions and keep you motivated. Sometimes knowing how you want to feel is a great starting point for setting goals with Katie’s help.
3. Prepare for sessions: Before each session, take some time to reflect on what you'd like to discuss. Consider jotting down any questions, concerns, or insights related to your professional life, family dynamics, personal growth, relationships, sexuality, values, or experiences navigating the world.
4. Engage actively: Therapy is a collaborative process. Participate actively in discussions, ask questions, and provide feedback to Katie. Your input is valuable in shaping the direction of your treatment and ensuring that it aligns with your unique needs and lived experiences.
5. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone: Growth and change often require facing difficult emotions or trying new approaches. Trust the therapeutic process and be open to Katie's guidance, even if it feels challenging at times. Remember that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to meaningful improvements in your work, relationships, and overall life satisfaction.
6. Integrate insights into daily life: Katie may suggest exercises, strategies, or activities to practice between sessions that take into account your unique experiences. Engage with these assignments and look for opportunities to apply your new skills and insights in your professional and personal life. Integrating what you learn in therapy into your daily routines can lead to lasting, positive changes.
7. Maintain consistency: Attend your scheduled sessions regularly and communicate with Katie if you need to reschedule. Consistent engagement in therapy is key to making progress and achieving your goals. Consider therapy as an investment in your well-being, just like you would prioritize important meetings or family commitments.
8. Communicate your needs: You may have specific scheduling needs or constraints. Let us know about your availability and any preferences you have for session times or frequency. Also, let us know about any accommodations, resources, or support you need to feel safe, understood, and affirmed in therapy. If you have children, feel free to discuss any concerns you have about how your mental health or lifestyle may impact your parenting or family dynamics. If you work from home some days, feel free to share those days with us to help with scheduling.
9. Celebrate your progress: Acknowledge and celebrate the small victories and changes you make along the way, both in your personal growth and in your professional or family life. Recognizing your progress will help maintain your motivation and commitment to the therapy process.
Remember, therapy is a journey, and progress takes time. Be patient with yourself, trust the process, and know that Katie is there to support you in navigating the unique challenges and opportunities you face.
Yes, as a licensed mental health professional, Katie is authorized to provide therapy services only to clients who are physically located in the states of Washington and Vermont. You must be within the boundaries of either Washington or Vermont at the time of your therapy sessions.
This requirement is based on state licensure laws and regulations, which ensure that mental health professionals are practicing within the scope of their training and expertise, and that clients are receiving care from providers who are familiar with and accountable to the laws and standards of their state.
Note: Consultation and coaching can be provided to people located in any state.
If you are planning to travel outside of Washington or Vermont and wish to continue your therapy sessions with Katie, please discuss your specific situation with her directly. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please do so at least 48 hours (or two business days) in advance. The most convenient way to do so is to log into your secure Client Portal.
**Cancellation & Reschedule Policy**
We value your time and ours. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, do so at least 48 hours (or TWO BUSINESS DAYS) in advance. Since your session is reserved explicitly for you, cancellations within this 48-hour window will incur a charge equivalent to the FULL SESSION RATE, including in instances of illness. Initial phone consultations do not fall under these rules.
Your communication, respect for time commitments, and adherence to boundaries are core parts of therapy. Therefore, please honor your scheduled appointments or discuss alternative scheduling options if frequent conflicts arise. Be advised that any cancellation or rescheduling beyond two instances within a 90-day period will result in an administrative fee equal to the full session rate, inclusive of cancellations due to illness.
** No-Show Policy **
If you miss your scheduled appointment without prior notification ("no-show"), a fee equivalent to the FULL SESSION RATE will be applied. Subsequent sessions will be suspended until we reestablish communication to confirm your next appointment. Initial phone consultations do not fall under these rules.
Cancellations, no-shows, and rescheduled administrative charges are NOT eligible for insurance reimbursement. If you have a credit card on file, you authorize Seattle Compassionate Counseling to charge it at the time of the missed appointment and following each attended session.
Insurance and Payment
While Katie is currently an out-of-network provider for insurance plans, we're happy to assist you with seeking reimbursement. At the end of each month, we'll provide you with a superbill, which is an itemized statement containing important details like the date of service, diagnosis codes, and procedure codes.
You can then submit this superbill to your insurance company to potentially receive reimbursement through your out-of-network mental health benefits. The amount of reimbursement may vary based on the specifics of your insurance plan, such as your deductible, co-insurance rates, and out-of-network coverage limits.
Why are you out of network?
Here are several reasons why we do not contract with insurance to be in-network:
1. Prioritizing personalized, high-quality care: By not accepting insurance directly, Katie can prioritize your unique needs and goals, tailoring treatment plans without being constrained by insurance limitations.
2. Protecting your privacy and confidentiality: When using insurance, sensitive information about your mental health is shared with the insurance company and becomes part of your permanent health record. By not accepting insurance directly, Katie keeps therapy more private.
3. Investing in the therapeutic relationship: By not dealing with insurance administration, Katie can invest more fully in her relationships with clients, focusing her time and energy on providing attentive, compassionate support.
4. Maintaining autonomy and clinical judgment: By not accepting insurance directly, Katie maintains the autonomy to use her clinical judgment and expertise to provide the most effective, evidence-based care tailored to your unique situation.
If you have concerns about the cost of therapy, please discuss your situation with Katie during your initial consultation. We can also provide referrals to community resources and lower-cost therapy options if needed.
We understand that therapy costs can feel significant, and we want to be transparent about the factors contributing to our rates. If you are interested in why we do not take insurance, please refer to the answer in the second part of the FAQ.
